Dear Reader,
Woman empowerment is no more a cliché. From start-ups to sustainable businesses, women entrepreneurs and leaders are increasing in numbers as well as business performance.
Recently during an interview, the interviewer asked me whether girls and young women should go for a career in their family businesses? My answer was definitely yes, provided girls have an inclination and determination to work in the business run by family members. There may be many obstacles including the family’s pressure to select a traditional career or beliefs of gender superiority. Though they can be surmounted if there is a strong desire.
India’s socio-economic and cultural fabric is changing. Whether metro cities or smaller towns, we are globally connected. The young India is getting out of the shackles of conventional, restrained beliefs of women’s roles in families and in decision making.
The road to success is still paved with obstacles. The national Sample survey shows that only 14% of businesses are owned or operated by women, mostly in the small sector. Yet, since ages women have shown courage, they have fought for their beliefs, and have been great examples of leadership.
Here are some stories of empowered women and how they changed their environment and contributed for a larger good.
