When should the founder of the business retire? A perennial question that comes up in almost every discussion about the family business continuity! For entrepreneurs and founders, building a business and a legacy is the expression of their life’s work, their creation which they may not like anybody else to take over.  At times, emotional involvement and social connect with the business is so deep that the founders/leaders tend to ignore their growing age and deteriorating health.  

Raj Shyamsunder, owner of a cosmeceuticals company had a challenge of retiring because he felt his sons were not competent enough to manage the business without him. Baldev Rajgir, an entrepreneur wanted to sell off his business and spend a retired life in his hometown but his business was not organized well for a buyer/investor to take over. There are a plenty of reasons including the desire to preserve the legacy for the entrepreneurs or senior generation leaders for not retiring.
