 While I was speaking to MBA students at a renowned university in Gujarat recently, one student asked, "my father and uncle both manage our family business. Often their opinions differ, and they blame one another for poor decisions. They want me to join the business but I don't want to. There is too much stress."

 Many next-generation scions face this plight. A lack of clear roles creates confusion and it is a key reason for youngsters to consider a career outside of the family business. In India, brain drain is not happening only in the case of IIT and IIM graduates. It’s happening in family businesses too. Younger generation is comfortable working in structured environments with defined roles. Senior members are used to juggling several roles as the business demands.

Clarity of roles and common goals are the cornerstones of professionally managed family businesses. They emerge from a collective purpose. Here are some thoughts and experiences shared by experts on the role definition in the family business.
