Traditionally dominated by men, family businesses in India are going through a significant change. With the evolving socio-economic fabric and rapid development of the start-up eco-system, women are beginning to play substantial roles as entrepreneurs, successors, and leaders.

­Despite this, the road to success, from homemakers to entrepreneurs, still faces obstacles. The national Sample survey shows that only 14% of businesses are owned or operated by women, mostly in the small business sector. The global disparity is concerning. About 126 million women have their own businesses worldwide, compared with about 8 million in India, the second most populous country in the world.

Will this disparity persist or diminish? Several factors, such as shrinking families, higher education opportunities, changes in succession laws, and corporate governance norms have led to an increase in the number of women who are leading their family businesses or establishing own ventures.
