 Families-in-business provide countless examples of communication that is unspoken, incomplete, skewed, or misunderstood. Communication gap is bound to happen among different generations and genders, people with different positions and authority. 

During my interaction with more than 150 family businesses to examine "family conflicts," I observed that when one or several members of the family were feeling anger, resentment, hurt, or fear, the intensity of conflict was high. In those families that enjoyed trust, transparency, and good will, rules of communication had been established among them or external advisors had been invited to facilitate the communication process.   

Effective communication is the secret sauce of successful family businesses. Getting communication right begins with understanding why and how it works.  Next, it is necessary to organize the communication process to make it more effective.  Here are a few global examples and tips on communication in family businesses.
